The Hertfordshire Family History Society holds regular meetings at Woolmer Green.
The Letchworth and District Family History Group has a membership made up of amateur family historians from in and around Letchworth Garden City, most of whom are looking for ancestors further afield than Hertfordshire.
The North Herts Archaeological Society arranges a series of lectures between September and June, occasional trips to places of archaeological interest as well as meetings and social events. There are opportunities to take part in local fieldwork, including excavations.
The Pirton Local History Group was formed to research the history of Pirton, a village to the west of Hitchin. The site is of interest to family historians, genealogists and local historians and the working group transcribes documents and saves them in electronic format, developing an on-line relational database.
The neighbouring town of Letchworth was the world’s first Garden City and modern town planning can trace its origins to the principles first tested there. The Letchworth Garden City Society promotes interest in the Garden City and is active in local conservation to ensure that the twon’s unique character and appearance are protected and preserved.
Baldock is another historic market town close to Hitchin. The Baldock Historical Society runs the town’s museum and holds an annual lecture programme.
The Baldock Society was formed in the 1970s to encourage high standards of planning and architecture; promote the preservation and protection of the local historical environment; and stimulate interest in issues that affect the town.
The Biggleswade History Society has the primary objective of promoting the advancement of public education through the study of local history in Biggleswade.
