Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge

A group of 20 members converged on the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge on the 8th July for a very special visit.

Not only did we have the opportunity to explore the many facinating galleries, including the 'Arctic Passages' exhibition, but we were also allowed to see, and handle, many of the objects from part of the important Ransom Collection. These items, almost 1,500 in number, formed the collection of a prominent Hitchin resident, the chemist and businessman Willian Ransom, and were donated to the museum after his death by his son Francis. They cover periods from the palaeolithic to the medieval and include many Roman items, particularly items excavated from local digs at the Purwell Roman Villa and from the Wilbury Hills. The curator, Anne Taylor, took time to give a detailed explanation to our members of selected items
