Meeting programme 2008

All meetings are held on Thursdays in Church House, Churchyard, Hitchin at 8pm, and are followed by light refreshments.

24th January

How we saved a chemist shop and made a garden. A history of the Hertfordshire Medical and Pharmaceutical Trust, by Dr Gerry Tidy

28th February

Hertfordshire Writers. A literary tour of the county's authors, by Pamela Shields

27th March

Members Evening and Annual General Meeting. After the official business and presentation of the Reginald Hine award, members tell of their current projects.

24th April

Rediscovering the Masters of the British Schools - a talk by Terry Ransome based on a recent publication.

22nd May

War-Torn Skies Over Hertfordshire. A talk about aerial conflict in the county during WW2 by local author Julian evan-Hart.

25th September

Hertfordshire's Hidden Histories. Investigating links between Hertfordshire people, the slave trade and its abolition, with Dr Jill Barber.

Lingering after a meeting

Two members enjoyed this meeting so much they didn't seem to want to go home.

23rd October

Old Hitchin Town. Some newly-discovered local film, introduced by member and former broadcaster Richard Whitmore. The film show lasts about 90 minutes so there will be a short interval with cold drinks instead of the usual coffee and tea. There will be no library at this meeting.

27th November

The Gatwards of Hitchin, a talk about the history of an old Hitchin family, by Anna Playle (nee Gatward).

5th December

SPECIAL EVENT - entertainment in Hitchin. An amusing and entertaining evening with Richard Whitmore based on his recently-published book. Light seasonal refreshments will be served.
