NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK IN HITCHIN: A Local History Surgery

Debra Turner, at Hitchin Library, kindly invited the Society to contribute to National Library Week events with a local history surgery.  Experienced HHS members Derek Wheeler, Pauline Humphries and Bridget Howlett hosted a drop-in question-and-answer session at the Library on the morning of Tuesday 3rd October.

There was a good attendance leading to a wide range of questions raised varying from the very earliest origins of the town in the late Roman period, aspects of local coaches and carriers, ‘underground’ Hitchin, specific questions of house and street history, to a detailed query on Hitchin’s particular role in the Wars of the Roses. Our three experts enjoyed the exchanges and having their collective knowledge stretched. We also hope that the session has raised awareness of the Society and its activities more generally.
