The Hertfordshire Association for Local History (of which the HHS is a member) holds an annual Symposium. This year it was in Harpenden in October and a number of HHS members attended, along with a portable display of Hitchin history and a selection of our publications.

The theme of the meeting was Rebels, Traitors and Eccentrics in Hertfordshire history. The speakers ranged over a diverse mix of subjects from ‘Oddballs of Ashwell’ to ‘Wicked Ladies and Pie-men: Highway Robbery in Hertfordshire’. The day concluded with some period entertainment given by the Chiltern West Gallery Quire featuring songs sung by the political activists of the Chartist movement during the 1830s and ’40s.
