Anthony Foster’s “brief history” is in fact a very thorough, well-illustrated exposition on the subject, taking the reader back to Norman times and beyond. The trade in grain, wool and livestock are all given their part in the story which is taken through the financial difficulties of the nineteenth century to the move to the present site.
