About us

HHS is a long-established society formed with a view to investigating and raising awareness of Hitchin’s unique historical character..

We are home to many amateur historians, and the society supports them with the research, production, publication and distribution of the final product. This can be in various formats – essays, journals, books, photographs and videos. Some examples of their work can be found interspersed around the site and HHS multimedia productions are listed on the Publications page.  The Society maintains a small library of books relating to Hitchin, many produced by members. This is available at members’ meetings for short-term loan or simply to browse.

There is a very active programme of presentations and events throughout the year. Visitors are welcome to attend but a small fee is charged.  The full events programme can be seen on the Events page.

The society is also home to some keen volunteers who have researched, created and maintain the Physic Garden situated outside the town’s library. Examples of herbs and medicinal plants that were used by chemists in days of yore are grown there. Read more about this fascinating garden area on The Physic Garden page.
