HHS is a long-established society formed with a view to investigating and raising awareness of Hitchin’s unique historical character..
We are home to many amateur historians, and the society supports them with the research, production, publication and distribution of the final product. This can be in various formats – essays, journals, books, photographs and videos.
The History of Hitchin page provides many examples of essays and photographic collections produced by members along with a short history of the town available to download. The Publications page provides a list of books and leaflets that have been produced, a number of which are still available for sale.
The Society maintains a small library of books relating to Hitchin, many produced by members. This is available at members’ meetings for short-term loan or simply to browse. Come along early to the meetings to take advantage of this facility. The list of books available can be found on the Library page
There is a very active programme of presentations and events throughout the year. Visitors are welcome to attend but a small fee is charged. The full events programme can be seen on the Events page.
The society is also home to some keen volunteers who have researched, created and maintain the Physic Garden situated outside the town’s library. Examples of herbs and medicinal plants that were used by chemists in days of yore are grown there. Read more about this fascinating garden area on The Physic Garden page.
