HHS is a long-established society, formed in 1977, with a view to investigating and raising awareness of Hitchin’s unique historical character.
Events : There is a very active programme of indoor presentations and outdoor events for members throughout the year all of which, unsurprisingly, have a Hitchin and historical related theme. The events programme can be found on the Events page. Visitors are welcome to attend but a small fee is charged.
History of Hitchin – We are home to many amateur historians, and the society supports them with their research, production, publication and distribution of the final product. This can be in various formats – essays, journals, books, photographs and videos. The History of Hitchin page provides many examples of essays and photographic collections produced by members along with a short history of the town available to download.
The Physic Garden – the society is home to some keen volunteers who have researched, created and maintain the Physic Garden situated outside the town’s library. Examples of herbs and medicinal plants that were used by chemists in days of yore are grown there. Read more about this fascinating garden area on The Physic Garden page.
The Publications page provides a look at past Newsletters as well as a list of books, leaflets and other media productions that have been produced by HHS members, a number of which are still available for sale.
The Society also maintains a small library of Hitchin related books relating to Hitchin, many produced by members. This is available at members’ meetings for short-term loan or simply to browse.
