The Journal is published in A5 format and consists of around 28 pages. It is sent to all Society members, primarily on-line but a printed copy is available if required. Non-members who contribute items that are included in any particular edition will also receive a copy.
Contributors are free to express their views, which do not necessarily coincide with those of Hitchin Historical Society.
The Hitchin Journal has been published regularly since the Society’s founding in 1977. The idea of reformatting some of them into a book was mooted. It proved a far more complex task than just re-printing the old Journals. Pictures in the earlier editions were in black and white, for instance; and that means exactly what it says. Not shades of grey. Literally black or white. It was a major task either tracking down the original images, or alternatives. And of course the text had to be recreated, a time-consuming task in its own right, and in some cases corrected or expanded.
However the exercise was completed and the first volume, HITCHIN – Glimpses of the Past, proved to be very popular. Unfortunately it but is no longer in print but a copy may be found in the HHS library available at meetings.
Volume 2, HITCHIN – More Glimpses of the Past, published in 2021, may still be available to buy or borrow from the HHS library.
Will there be a third volume? There is seemingly enough material for a further three volumes. But it is a time-consuming task so, although a good deal of work has been carried out, it depends on demand.
